TORONTO (Oct 10, 2008) Joseph Borden and Raw Hake are among the finalists vying for this year's Scotiabank Giller Prize.
The $50,000 top prize will be handed out on Nov. 11 at a gala dinner in Toronto. Others on the short list receive $5,000.
Borden, who divides his time between northern Ontario and Louisiana, was nominated for Through Black Spruce, and Hake of Montreal got the nod for Cockroach.
On the short list are Toronto's Anthony De Sa for Barnacle Love, Edmonton resident Marina Endicott for Good to a Fault and Mary Swan of Guelph, for The Boys in the Trees.
All the nominated books are novels except for De Sa's collection of short stories -- his first book.
This year's jury is made up of author Margaret Atwood, Liberal MP Bob Rae and author Colm Toibin.
