Today in music history

* In 1955, Ed Sullivan presented a 15-minute tribute to rhythm and blues on his television show. Featured were Bo Diddley, Lavern Baker, the Five Keys and saxophonist Willis (Gator Tail) Jackson. Diddley refused Sullivan's request to perform Tennessee Ernie Ford's Sixteen Tons, claiming he didn't know the song, and sang Bo Diddley instead.
