CURRENT PROGRAMS

Your daily newspaper, with all of its features, is a flexible and adaptable “living textbook” that can be used in virtually every teaching situation. Recognizing this, educators and newspaper personnel began the Newspaper in Education program over forty years ago. The Hamilton Spectator's own Newspaper in Education department has been operating since 1975 and is proud to support students and educators by offering an extensive selection of educational experiences and resource packages.

  • Educational Resource Packages

Designed and written by educators, Newspaper in Education resource packages utilize newspaper oriented activities to teach core concepts in a variety of subject areas and across a range of grade levels. Complete resource packages include weekday delivery of The Hamilton Spectator for a specified period of time and teaching materials. Teaching materials consist of a series of user-friendly activities or a series of sequential lessons and culminating projects, blackline masters, and, in many cases, links to Ministry Expectations and assessment tools.

An educational resource package of your choice is provided FREE with your classroom order of at least 100 newspapers, delivered in minimum quantities of 10 per day on your choice of weekdays. Newspapers are delivered on the day of publication, in the early hours of the morning, well before your school opens. The Spectator provides newspapers to schools at a special educational rate. Special rates are also available for Saturday newspapers (delivered on Monday). See our online catalogue of Newspaper in Education Programs for descriptions of these resource packages.

  • The Library Special

Of particular interest to libraries, resource centres, ESL classes, continuing education and other specialized educational programs, the Newspaper in Education department offers daily delivery of The Hamilton Spectator throughout the academic year at up to 70% off the regular subscription price. Refer to ‘Current Newspaper in Education Promotions' for additional details and order form.

  • Workshops

As part of our commitment to support educators, the Newspaper in Education department offers workshops free of charge. These “hands-on” workshops provide training on using the newspaper as a teaching tool. To request a workshop, contact our Newspaper in Education/Business Development Co-ordinator at the number below.

Spectator Tour

Bring Your Class to The Spectator

Most visitors are amazed at how a high-tech newspaper operates. News and photographs are flashed in seconds from across Spectator country and around the world. Stories are prepared and edited on an hourly basis. Thousands of papers are printed in minutes by towering colour presses, each three stories high and over one hundred thousand newspapers are delivered to homes, schools and retail outlets each day, Monday through Saturday. Over 600 employees work together 305 days a year to produce and deliver a unique blend of information in the form of a daily newspaper.

We invite you and your students to experience the world of The Hamilton Spectator by scheduling a tour and by ordering a Newspaper in Education resource package which includes delivery of The Hamilton Spectator to your classroom for a specified amount of time. The newspaper is a 'living textbook' and a superb teaching tool. Hundreds of teachers use it and our resource packages to teach a variety of skills in many curriculum areas. Whether they have used a Newspaper in Education resource package before or after a tour, teachers agree their lessons have gained even more impact when their students have had the benefit of a Spectator tour.
