OAKVILLE- Canadian Mike Weir, Eric Axley and Anthony Kim topped the leaderboard at six-under par and had finished their rounds when play was suspended for nearly six hours today in the opening round of the RBC Canadian Open at Glen Abbey Golf Club.
Weir, of Bright’s Grove, Ont., is bidding to become the first Canadian to win this country's national golf championship since Pat Fletcher in 1954.
The 72-hole, four-day PGA Tour event began this morning on a course soaked by almost 200 millemetres of rain since last Saturday.
Because of the wet and muddy conditions the players are using the lift, clean and place rule.
After a five hour and 42 minute rain delay, play resumed shortly before 7 this evening.
Only 31 players had finished their round and close to half the field hadn't teed off when a thunderstorm followed by heavy rain forced the PGA Tour to suspend play at 12:51 p.m.
The PGA Tour hopes to get in as many holes as possible this evening and then finish the first round Friday morning before starting the second round of the 72-hole event.
