WINONA - Food processing company E.D. Smith says it is shutting down its Cambridge salad dressing manufacturing plant by next July, affecting 85 jobs.
The Niagara region company said it will shift production frm the five-year-old leased plant to other company facilities in Seaforth, Ont. and Pennsylvania.
"This decision was a difficult one, and we deeply regret the impact that the closure will have on our employees," said Keiran Kelly, E.D. Smith's managing director.
"However, we need to align our production to best fit the needs of our customers - and with this change we believe we've struck an appropriate and necessary balance between business requirements, customer commitments and the interests of all of our employees."
E.D. Smith makes jams, spreads, marmalades, jellies, pie fillings, ketchup, salsa and other food products at plants in Cambridge, Seaforth and Winona, Ont. and North East, Penn.
The company makes foods for both the private label and food service markets.
