MONTREAL–A five-alarm fire early Saturday morning destroyed a paper recycling plant in southwestern Montreal.

Smoke could be smelled throughout downtown Montreal and the city's south shore and a light dusting of ash coated suburban lawns and city streets.

About 125 firefighters were on the scene to fight the blaze in the city's Pointe St. Charles district.

Part of the 41,806 square metres structure collapsed in the fire.

The cause of the fire, which began at 2 a.m. Saturday morning, is unknown.

No injuries were reported.
