A six-hour police standoff with a man holed up in a Wentworth Street North apartment ended peacefully this morning when tactical officers burst inside the unit.

Police said the standoff began around 3 a.m. when police went there to investigate a complaint from a woman who alleged she had been threatened by her 31-year-old boyfriend

Wentworth was closed from  Cannon Street East and Wilson Street after  the man barricaded himself in a basement apartment.

When the occupant of the apartment refused to let them in and told them he had a weapon, police evacuated several homes in the area as a precaution, closed the street  and called in a negotiator and the tactical squad to surround the home.

The man has allowed several other persons who were  the building at the time, including his roommate, to leave safely.

Tactical officers broke into the apartment around 9 a.m. after negotiations proved fruitless. They found the man, who is already known to police, hiding inside.

No weapon was found.

He has been charged with two counts of uttering threats
