(Jul 24, 2008) The province's Special Investigations Unit has released new information about an altercation with Hamilton police that left a furniture store owner with serious injuries.
The SIU now says it incorrectly reported that police responded to an alarm call at the Park's Furniture store around 1:30 a.m last Friday.
"Followup investigation has learned that the alarm call originated from the warehouse and not the store," SIU spokesperson John Yoannou said yesterday.
Police responded to the alarm at the warehouse on Stirton Street, about two blocks away from the furniture store.
Two officers then became involved with store owner Patrick Gabriel, 41.
"There was an altercation between police and the businessman outside the warehouse on Stirton," Yoannou said.
"As a result of that altercation, he has been treated for fractures to his right leg in two places, and he is believed to have cracked ribs."
The SIU investigates all incidents involving police that result in serious injury or death.
