UNO Facts

UNO means "one" in Italian and Spanish, and is a unique component of this game. When a player discards his or her second-to-last card, he must yell UNO.

UNO cards are red, blue, green and yellow. There are also special command cards to make game play more challenging.

UNO was created by an Ohio barbershop owner in 1971. Mattel started marketing UNO in 1992. Since UNO's creation, more than 200 million games have been sold in more than 80 countries.

A deck of UNO cards has been a family staple for more than 30 years. With this extremely popular card game, the goal is to be the first player or team to score 500 points. Points are scored by being the first to rid yourself of all the cards in your hand.

UNO Spin is a new version of the original UNO, adding innovative layers of strategy and focus. When a spin card is played, someone must spin the wheel. Players may be forced to discard cards, pick up more cards or even exchange hands.

In a single turn, everything can change and players can come from behind to suddenly take the lead. This game includes a spin wheel and 112 cards.

We asked children at a Today's Family after-school program to give this new version of UNO a whirl.

"Everybody knows how to play UNO, so it was good for them to get a different idea of it," said supervisor Kylie Schmidt. "They all really liked it."

The after-school program already has the UNO Original card game in its collection, so many of the children already understood the concept.

Other versions of the popular UNO Original card game include UNO H2O, Deluxe UNO and UNO Extreme. UNO H2O can be played underwater thanks to waterproof cards.

Deluxe UNO provides a deck of cards as well as a score pad and pencil and black velvet-lined storage box, and UNO Extreme features a motorized card launcher.

UNO games are sold at stores including Toys "R" Us and Zellers.
