My mother once told me to never buy cheap shoes and now I am a great believer in investing in good-quality accessories to smarten up any outfit. With fashion changing every minute, it is a wise to stick to the basics and add zip with accessories.

Here are a few of fall's must-have accessories:

* Oversized bag: Bright colours or shine accent a simple, monotone outfit. Large handbags can dwarf a slight frame but they have a certain slimming effect. Test before you buy as some bags weigh 10 pounds empty.

* Belt: Cinch your waist for an hourglass shape and no extra trips to the gym. Big buckles work wonders on curvy figures. Wear a belt high for the most slimming effect.

* Chunky beads: Wear them around the collar bone if you're petite and longer if you're tall.

* Patent leather: Wear patent leather with a contrasting fabric, such as a chunky wool, to give an outfit luxurious texture.

* Boots: Knee-length black boots and black tights help lengthen the leg. Low-cut boots and booties help balance chunky sweaters and tops.

* Tights: Black tights have put hosiery back on the fashion radar. Bright colours give an eye-popping lift to sober shades.

* Gloves: Gloves of any length offer a finishing touch that keeps hands cosy. Wear over-the-elbow gloves with a short-sleeved jacket or a sleeveless shift. Look for varying lengths, textures and colours.
