Your coat is your daily fashion statement during cold weather season, so a wise investment is needed.

If you plan to wear the coat for several seasons, avoid a trendy style. Duffle coats are a classic casual that is enjoying a revival in many fabrics, from boiled wool to canvas. Removable hoods, collars and cuffs extend its wearability.

A casual coat doesn't have to be boring. Most of us stick to black, brown or grey, but a bold colour adds a little dash. Just be sure you love the colour enough to wear it for months or years.

Padded jackets, peacoats and parkas are practical and look great with jeans and cords. Princess cuts and double-breasted coats are a smart look.

A versatile option is a peacoat to wear with jeans. A puffy coat works with jeans and skirts.

Military accents, belts and big buttons are popular. Or use a belt to update a coat you already own.
