(Dec 3, 2007) If you are like me, you won't spend megabucks for a holiday frock. But that doesn't mean hauling out the tired black number for another year. Here are five ways to look like a million without breaking the bank.
1. Concrete floors. Don't turn up your nose at shopping for party looks at stores with concrete floors. Christmas shopping takes on a new meaning as supermarkets and box stores put fashion in the aisles. Everyone, it seems, wants to be a trolley-dolly.
2. Shop vintage. A vintage cocktail dress will turn heads and a scarf, beaded top or jacket can do wonders for a simple skirt that has seen more parties than you care to recall. Check out consignment stores, Value Village and antique shops for clothing that has proved it can go the distance.
3. Bottom to top. While dresses and skirts are perfect party wear, a sparkly top worn and your best jeans will take you from work to cocktails. Trousers are another good alternative. Wide-legged or slim black pants work with a sparkly top or white shirt.
4. Bling it on. A necklace, brooch or bracelet can give an outfit a new lease on party life. Look for vintage pieces you can makeover with little effort. For the real thing without the big price tag, try Winner's jewellery counter.
5. Hair and makeup. Professionally styled hair and makeup may make you feel better than a designer dress.
