You don't have to read between the lines to know that stripes are poised to be a major trend. The classic pattern never dates and is constantly revamped to fit the latest styles. This season they are infused with a '50s air seen in Italian label Miu Miu's pajama-style striped trousers, Chanel's striped blazers and striped knits on every catwalk.

Stripes are less complicated than other patterns and they can look chic or casual. They're more interesting than solid black or navy but mild enough for conservative tastes, and feminine without being coy. While it remains wintry, wear them to cheer up a dark suit, as an alternative to a white shirt, or team them with a slim, dark cardigan.

Let's not forget that stripes can be undeniably slimming, and chevron stripes give a lean look.

Pastel stripes on a white base and bold stripes on black are universally flattering. Striped dusters will update a tired dress and thinly striped trousers will make you look and feel inches taller.
