Unusual style details -- a dress with an asymmetric neckline or a sweater with a soft cowl -- give basics a new look. Look for these details to give classic shapes a modern twist.

* Asymmetric: Tilda Swinton's Lanvin gown at the Oscars may have ruined this neckline for some, but, in truth, an asymmetrical neckline is wonderfully flattering. It has the drama of a halter by showing skin and is a dressy, eye-catching look. Where the halter is suggestive, the one shoulder style is regal. Pick up one-shouldered tops in flowing silk or cotton. A one-shoulder tunic will make the perfect beach party ensemble this summer.

* Cowl: A draped neckline is universally flattering as it draws the eye away from the rest of the body. Instead of bulky wool, choose sleeveless or silk-cashmere mixes for the transition from winter to spring.

* Halter: Clavicles may be the new cleavage, and the neck is this season's erogenous zone, with many dresses featuring halter necks. Older women who don't want to stick their necks out will love the more concealing high-neck halters. Pair these with a wrap, and you are primed to party.

* Nehru and keyhole: If you would rather draw attention to your face and cleavage than your waist, wear a keyhole sweater, or Nehru-collar jacket or shirt and avoid the boxy look of a crewneck.
