(Jul 31, 2008) JERRY DAY: If Jerry Garcia were alive, he'd be turning 66 tomorrow. The folks down at the Pepper Jack Cafe (38 King William St.) have always had a soft spot in their heart for the Grateful Dead guitarist, so they tend to celebrate his birthday in fashion. The Pepper Jack will be spinning Jerry's music from 9:30 p.m. till 2 a.m. tomorrow, courtesy of the Gratefully Deadicated Sound System. No cover.
THE MIKE RUBY QUINTET: High-quality jazz continues at the Corktown (175 Young St.) Monday at 8 p.m. with Mike Ruby, a one of the brightest young saxophonists in New York studying at the Manhattan School of Music. Born in Toronto, the 20-year-old tenor player has a CD, Play Time, out on the prestigious Alms label and is currently on a cross-Canada tour. Admission is $10 at the door.
LINDSAY DEUTSCH: This internationally known virtuoso violinist joins Boris Brott and the National Academy Orchestra Wednesday to perform Vivaldi's Four Seasons along with Astor Piazzolla's stunning tango-inspired Four Seasons of Buenos Aires. At St. John's Church in Ancaster at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $25 with discounts for seniors and students. Call 1-888-475-9377 or 905-525-7664.
DEF LEPPARD: This British pop metal band has sold more than 65 million albums worldwide during the past 20 years and they continue to fill arenas throughout North America. They had to postpone their show at Copps Coliseum earlier this year when Joe Elliott got sick. They're back Wednesday with Billy Idol opening. Tickets are $49.50, $59.50 or $79.50 at Copps Coliseum box office, ticketmaster.ca and 905-527-7666.
THE REMBETIKA HIPSTERS: Jazz-influenced bouzouki pop from Calgary. This band has been touring the country with its unique blend of Canadian originals and Greek Rembetika songs since 1996. You'll get a little Balkan, a little Middle East and some contemporary belly dance instrumentals. The Hipsters play The Pepper Jack Cafe Wednesday at 7 p.m.
