(Sep 9, 2008) Leslie Feist, winner of five awards at this year's Junos for her hit 1-2-3-4, has been added to the lineup for the second annual I Love The Escarpment benefit concert Sept. 20 in north Burlington.
Feist will join Bruce Cockburn, Juno-winning guitarist Derek Miller and host Sarah Harmer at a private farm on the Mount Nemo plateau for the afternoon outdoor concert to raise funds and awareness for a local group's fight against a new quarry application in the area.
"We're old friends with a shared interest," Harmer said in an interview after announcing Feist would be able to make a special guest appearance at the benefit. "Leslie (Feist) lives on the escarpment, north of Toronto, and has an interest in its supposedly protected landscape."
Harmer is a Burlington native and one of the founders of PERL (Protecting Escarpment Rural Land), which was formed in opposition to Nelson Aggregate's application to significantly expand its Mount Nemo quarry. The location of the Sept. 20 benefit is within walking distance of the quarry.
Last year, 550 people gathered at the farm for the inaugural benefit concert which featured the Barenaked Ladies and Harmer.
Cockburn, an Officer of the Order of Canada, is a multiple Juno-winning artist known for his political and environmental activism. Two years ago, the 62-year-old singer-songwriter was presented with a special Juno award for his humanitarian work at home and abroad.
Harmer, a two-time Juno winner, has toured extensively with Cockburn.
"My band and I will join Bruce for four or five songs at the end of the show," said Harmer, who grew up on a Mount Nemo farm.
Miller, a native of Six Nations, is a blues-rock guitarist who won the 2008 Juno for aboriginal recording of the year.
Tickets to the concert, which runs from 2 to 6 p.m. on Sept. 20, are $99 for adults and $49 for children under 13. For more information and tickets, visit perlofburlington.org or aplemusic.com.
