(Oct 10, 2008) Texas state health officials feel there's something fishy -- about fish pedicures.
Using lots of little fish to nibble bits of dead skin off people's feet is the hot thing in the spa world.
Although officials note they know of no actual cases of fish pedicures causing health problems, they are concerned the fishies have the potential to spread infections and have banned the practice.
The Zen Luxury Nail and Beauty Bar in a Dallas suburb bought $2,500 worth of the fish. The co-owner tells The Dallas Morning News she's not sure what they're going to do with the 500 guppy-like creatures, now that fish pedicures are banned.
Fish pedicures created something of a splash earlier this year. John Ho, who runs the Yvonne Hair and Nails salon with his wife, Yvonne Le in northern Virginia, had said earlier this year that 5,000 customers had already taken the plunge.
Ho started using fish because he wanted a replacement for pedicures that use razors to scrape off dead skin. The razors have fallen out of favour with state regulators because of concerns about whether they're sanitary.
