(Jul 14, 2008) Thank James Bond for this one.
When Daniel Craig emerged from the Caribbean Sea in Casino Royale, his brief trunks not only recalled another iconic Bond swimsuit scene stealer -- Ursula Andress emerging from the surf in Dr. No -- but it ignited a trend.
What started as a ripple when the movie was released almost two years ago, has now crested as a full-on wave of a trend.
Men's swimsuits have gone short, snug and sleek as the Speedo-style suit makes a comeback.
Style icon David Beckham caused a Speedo sensation when he was photographed in a multitude of tight swim briefs while holidaying on Roberto Cavalli's yacht.
Giorgio Armani, a vision of health and fitness at age 73, was spotted on holiday sporting a Speedo-like swimsuit, as was Justin Timberlake, playing a French-Canadian lothario in The Love Guru.
Self-confessed clotheshorse, NHL player Sean Avery, who just completed a stint as an intern at Vogue magazine, recently confessed to People magazine: "I'm bringing the European flavour back to America. I'm rocking a straight Speedo all summer."
Melissa Austria, co-owner of the trendy Toronto menswear emporium Gotstyle, credits the return of this icon to the '70s revival in menswear.
"There is a return of that look of the 1970s guy -- tight shirt, chest hair and facial hair," she notes.
"Guys today are showing a lot more openness to lower V-necks, the open collar shirt, and wearing more jewellery."
Alon Freeman, the menswear market editor at Holt Renfrew, agrees that men have turned their attention to the '70s but says its return is also part of the form fitting look in menswear right now.
"Everything is tightening up," he says. "Shorts are getting shorter which has lead to a tighter spandex swim trunk. Even board shorts are getting smaller in proportion and showing more leg."
And now Bond is going back to briefs.
"Men look at the gadgets and the cars in that movie and then they see Daniel Craig in those snug trunks and it gives them permission -- they think, if it's okay for James Bond ..."
But their body better be licensed to thrill.
Model behaviour
If you want to wear a Speedo-type swimsuit this summer, it would help if you had the body of model, Jerald Bezener.
What's his secret?
"I've been really lucky and have good genetics," says the 34-year-old married father of two girls.
Bezener admits he doesn't own a gym membership, just some free weights that he almost never uses at home.
"It relates more to diet. You just have to be sensible about what you eat," he says.
He tries to be active by hiking and walking. "I've also been known to skateboard down Queen Street in my suit, skinny tie and Chuck Taylor sneakers to photo shoots and auditions."
