MPPs back compensation for Truscott

Toronto (May 16, 2008)

Guelph MPP Liz Sandals had full support from the legislature yesterday for a private member's bill asking the province to compensate Steven Truscott.

That's despite the fact the province has received advice on the issue from retired Justice Sydney Robins, advice Attorney General Chris Bentley hasn't yet made public.

The Ontario Court of Appeal overturned Truscott's 1959 murder conviction last summer.

Members of all parties spoke passionately in the House yesterday about Truscott's ordeal.

"Steven's young life was stolen from him," Sandals told the House. "This is an opportunity for members of this legislature to also provide advice to the attorney-general on behalf of their constituents. It's important this legislature also recognize a miscarriage of justice has occurred."
