GUELPH (Jul 24, 2008) Workers at Ben-Met Steel and Metal Inc., dug up an artillery round with a front end loader.
Guelph police said the scrapyard workers found a rusty artillery round around 11 a.m. while doing routine maintenance in the yard.
Mark Cohen, owner of the company, said his employees saw what appeared to be an artillery shell and left it where it was, but cleared the area and contacted police.
The Waterloo Regional Police Service bomb unit was called in and cleared the area and isolated the artillery round. Guelph police Sergeant Joe Hall said they discharged the round, "disrupting" and then disposing of it.
