The 2008 Scotiabank Giller Prize has been seized by a youth movement.
Anthony De Sa's debut story collection Barnacle Love and Mary Swan's first novel The Boys in the Trees are among the five finalists for the $50,000 prize, announced today in Toronto.
Also making the shortlist were Joseph Boyden's Through Black Spruce, Rawi Hage's Cockroach and Marina Endicott's Good to a Fault, all second novels for the respective authors.
The finalists were culled from a 15-book longlist by jurors Margaret Atwood, Bob Rae and Colm Toibin. In total, 95 books by 38 publishers were considered.
The winner will be announced during a televised gala on Nov. 11 in Toronto.
